Protein gets talked about a lot at the moment.
“Eat more protein.”
“High-protein diet.”
“Protein shakes.”
Nowadays, " high protein" is stamped on everything — every package, every product.
Be careful, because they’re putting it on foods that were never real protein sources in the first place — cereals, bars, processed snacks loaded with sugars.
It looks like nutrition, but It isn’t.

But most people still don’t understand what protein actually is — or why it matters.
Let’s fix that.
What Is Protein?
Protein is not just “food.”
It’s the raw material your body is built from.
At a microscopic level, protein is made up of amino acids — small compounds that link together to form tissue.
Muscle, skin, organs, enzymes, hormones…
All of it is built from protein.
Not carbs. Not fat.
Protein is structure.
Where Does Protein Come From?
You only get protein from food, but not all protein sources are created equally.
Animal-Based Protein (Complete)
Meat (beef, lamb, pork)
Eggs
Fish
These contain:
All essential amino acids
In the right ratios
Highly absorbable
This is what your body recognizes and uses efficiently.

Plant-Based Protein (Incomplete)
Beans
Grains
Nuts
These are:
Lower in key amino acids
Less bioavailable
Often incomplete (missing essential amino acids)
You can combine them…But it’s harder, less efficient, and easier to get wrong.
What Does Protein Do in the Body?
Protein isn’t just about muscle. It runs almost everything.
1. Builds and Repairs Tissue
Every time you:
Train
Move
Live
Your body breaks down tissue.
Protein rebuilds it.
No protein = no repair.
2. Creates Enzymes
Enzymes control every chemical reaction in your body:
Digestion
Energy production
Cellular repair
No protein → no enzymes → nothing functions properly.
3. Produces Hormones
Many key hormones are built from protein or rely on it:
Growth signals
Metabolic regulation
Recovery processes
Without enough protein, your system doesn’t regulate properly.
4. Supports Immune Function
Your immune system depends on protein to:
Build antibodies
Fight infections
Recover from illness
Low protein = weaker defence.
5. Maintains Muscle Mass
This is the obvious one — but it matters.
Muscle isn’t just for looks.
It’s:
Metabolic health
Strength
Longevity
And it is constantly being broken down and rebuilt. Protein keeps you from losing it.
Muscle is hard to build, you do not want to lose it by not eating enough.
Our body can not store protein so we have to consume it every day.
The Real Problem
Most people aren’t under-eating calories. They’re under-eating quality protein.
And when that happens, the body adapts by breaking itself down to get what it needs.
That’s when you see:
Fatigue
Weakness
Poor recovery
Loss of muscle
The Bottom Line
Protein isn’t optional. It’s not a trend.
It’s the foundation of your body.
It builds you
It repairs you
It regulates you
Without enough of it, nothing else works properly.
Final Thought
Forget food with labels like “high-protein” , stick to whole food, like animal meats, and healthy animal fats.
Ask a better question:
Am I giving my body enough of the material it’s literally made from?
If not…That’s where everything starts to fall apart.
