Addictions affect millions of people worldwide, often making it difficult to stop harmful behaviours despite knowing the risks.

At the heart of many addictions lies a powerful brain chemical called dopamine. Understanding how dopamine works and why it drives addictive behaviours can shed light on why substances like alcohol, nicotine, drugs, sugar, and even social media can become so hard to resist.

What is dopamine and why does it matter?


Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, a chemical messenger that transmits signals between nerve cells in the brain.

It plays a key role in how we experience pleasure, motivation, and reward. When you do something enjoyable, such as eating your favourite food or achieving a goal, your brain releases dopamine. This release creates a feeling of satisfaction and encourages you to repeat the behaviour.

However, many addictive substances and activities hijack this system by causing an unnatural surge of dopamine, which can lead to compulsive behaviour.


How dopamine causes addiction


Addictive substances and behaviours trigger dopamine release in the brain’s reward centre, particularly in an area called the nucleus accumbents.

This flood of dopamine produces intense pleasure or a "high."

Over time, the brain adjusts to these high dopamine levels by reducing its natural production or by decreasing the number of dopamine receptors. This process is called tolerance.


Tolerance means that the person needs more of the addictive substance or behaviour to achieve the same dopamine-driven pleasure. When they don’t get it, dopamine levels drop, causing unpleasant feelings like anxiety, irritability, or depression. These withdrawal symptoms push the person to seek the addictive substance or behaviour again, creating a cycle that is hard to break.


How Addiction Actually Forms

Addiction follows a simple loop:

  2. Behaviour (eat, scroll, drink, etc.)

  3. Dopamine spike (reward)

  4. Brain remembers → craving builds

Over time:

  • The brain becomes less sensitive

  • You need more stimulation

Smokers often report that cigarettes help reduce stress or improve concentration, but these effects are tied to dopamine’s influence on mood and focus.


Drugs


Many drugs, including cocaine, methamphetamine, and opioids, cause massive dopamine surges. Cocaine blocks dopamine reuptake, leaving high levels of dopamine in the brain. Methamphetamine causes dopamine release and blocks its breakdown. Opioids indirectly increase dopamine by affecting other brain chemicals. These drugs create powerful highs but also severe addiction risks due to their impact on dopamine.

Why dopamine-driven addictions are hard to break


Addictions hijack the brain’s natural reward system, making it difficult to stop even when the person wants to. The brain learns to associate the addictive substance or behaviour with pleasure and relief from negative feelings. This creates strong habits and cravings.


Breaking addiction requires more than willpower. It often involves:
